316 VS. 316 L! Which One is Better?

Stainless steel is referred to as a wide category of alloys made up of steel. The metal is known for having some proportion of chromium that helps it give protection against corrosion and similar damage. If we talk about the amount of chromium present in it, it highly depends on the variant of stainless steel that you are working with.

Grade 316 of stainless steel contains molybdenum because of which it possesses increased resistance to corrosion. On the other hand, grade 316 L is known for having less carbon and molybdenum which makes both of them different from each other.

Though both 316 and 316 L are known for having marine characteristics and both are marine- grades but still there are some significant differences between both the grades. The amount of carbon present in 316 L cannot exceed 0.03%. It helps in minimizing the risk related to carbon precipitation making it a perfect fit for resisting corrosion.

On the other hand, 316 grade of stainless steel possesses a mid- range of carbon i.e. between 2% to 3%.

How To Select Between Grade 316 and Grade 316 ?

Following are the factors that can help in determining which grade is best?

  1. Resistance to Corrosion

Grade 316 L is considered as a superior choice for places where the risk of corrosion is high and where the level of temperature is high. As compared to 316, the amount of carbon present in 316 L is less. For applications like plumbing, 316 L is the perfect choice. Rhinox, an American Innovation Company manufactures stainless steel plumbing fittings using grade 316 L which makes the plumbing pipes and fittings highly resistant to corrosion and other related damage.

  1. Applications

Both these grades of stainless steel can be utilized in a variety of applications. Grade 316 is utilized primarily in construction and infrastructure projects whereas grade 316 L is highly suitable for plumbing related projects as the grade possesses the capacity to withstand harsh temperature conditions and can resist even high levels of corrosion.

Rhinox USA is There to Help!

The key and significant difference between 316 and 316 L is the presence of the amount of carbon.

At Rhinox, each pipe and fitting is manufactured from certified 316 L. The features of 316 L SS pipe fittings include low carbon with between 2%-3% molybdenum content that ensures higher level of corrosion resistance.
