Why You Should Never Pour Grease Down the Drain?

Just like the grease and fats are not good for your health, the same goes for the drain pipes. But the cooking oil left over and grease always make their way down the drain pipes, as we think that it is ok to pour them in the sink. Even sometimes we pour hot water or dish soap over it to avoid blockage of drain pipes. But in reality pouring the grease down the drain is a serious concern.

Grease or any other blockage does more damage to your plumbing system especially if you have installed plastic or PVC pipes or used copper fittings. Plumbing experts recommend stainless steel tube fittings and stainless steel water pipes to ensure good health for the plumbing system in home or at workplace. High grade ss tube fittings or stainless steel fittings manufactured by Rhinox India has become the first choice of quality conscious consumers. Stainless steel is a sturdy raw material that doesn’t get affected by blockage or chemical leaching. So even if you have used stainless steel pipes and SS fittings, you should never pour grease down the drain. Read on further to know why is grease harmful for your drainage system -

Want to know how harmful grease can be?

When the grease which is usually found in margarine, butter, meat fads, dressings etc. is poured down the drain, it stays there and when the temperature gets lower, it solidifies clogging the pipes. And with time the blockage gets serious leading to the complete blockage. Even it doesn’t stick to the pipes but overtime, the grease formation breaks down into fatty acids and glycerol, which then binds with the calcium in the sewers to form fatbergs (soap-like compounds). These fatbergs keep growing and bind to the ceilings of the sewerage clogging the entire sewer pipe.

Solution

Well, now that we know the issue, let's find the solution and the best way to dispose of the grease and cooking oils. Disposing the oil, grease etc. even in the liquid form at room temperature will still clog the pipe. So, after using the cooking oils (coconut, olive, sunflower, etc.), wait for it to cool down, then take a tissue or paper towel and soak the oil from the washing pan, finally throwing the paper into the dustbin. In case, the quantity is more, then either you can reuse the oil or keep collecting it into a container and can then throw it in the trash once it’s full. The same procedure can be followed for the grease in the pans; either dispose it off with a paper or keep collecting it into a container.

In case, you have already drained the grease down the pipe unknowingly, then pour the boiling water along with the dish soap continuously as it may help to remove the grease from the pipe but it can still clog the sewer system.
